Why is there a Georgia BioLab lawsuit?

On September 29, 2024 a chemical reaction caused a fire at the BioLab plant in Conyers, Georgia. The fire released plumes of hazardous smoke into the air in Rockdale County.

The smoke contained chlorine and hydrochloric acid. It is proven that exposure to these poisonous elements can cause serious respiratory issues and health problems.

For more than a week, residents of Rockdale County were under shelter-in-place orders and thousands of residents were forced to evacuate their homes. Many Conyers residents who became ill from chlorine exposure had to go to the hospital more than once.

Changes in the wind caused the toxic smoke to move into metro Atlanta, affecting surrounding counties and communities beyond Conyers and Rockdale County.

This is not the first time this happens. BioLab has a history of negligence with incidents in 2004, 2016 and 2020.

What caused the Conyers BioLab fire?

BioLab, manufactures chemicals for swimming pools and spas at the Conyers BioLab facility. These pool cleaning products contain trichloroisocyanuric acid (TCCA), a chemical that gradually dissolves in water and releases chlorine.

On the day of the BioLab fire, a sprinkler malfunctioned at the plant and TCAA didn’t dissolve properly when exposed to water. This triggered a chemical reaction that caused the fire and released toxic chlorine gas. The fire was serious enough to send large plumes and clouds of smoke visible across Atlanta.

People all over Rockdale County and surrounding counties reported a strong smell of chlorine and the hazy conditions remained for days.

In 2004, a BioLab fire caused 300 people to evacuate and a $7 million dollars settlement was obtained on behalf of residents and business owners impacted by that fire. BioLab has repeatedly failed to store their reactive chemicals properly and to prevent them from exposure to water. Similar incidents have occurred multiple times since 2004.

Who can join the BioLab lawsuit?

The Conyers BioLab fire and resulting plume caused health issues, disrupted many businesses, imposed expensive evacuation measures, and halted daily life activities for thousands of people.

Class action lawsuits have been filed in Georgia against BioLab and Kik Consumer Products. By filling a BioLab lawsuit, victims may be able to receive compensation for medical bills, lost wages, relocation expenses, inconvenience and more.

What are the long-term effects of air contamination in Rockdale County?

At this time, the long-term effects of the 2024 BioLab fire on Georgia’s air quality and public health remain unknown.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is tracking the air quality in Rockdale County for chlorine and other chemical compounds. During the first week after the fire, one sensor found that chlorine levels in the air were 22 times higher than the minimal level that puts vulnerable people at risk.

The Rockdale County Emergency Management Agency lifted the shelter-in-place order and the evacuation zone after EPA readings for the area showed it was safe for residents. However, many people had already been affected by then.

Chlorine gas is highly toxic and can result in severe respiratory issues, coughing, shortness of breath, chest pain, and irritation for the eyes and throat. Vulnerable members of the public, including children and people with prior health conditions may be the most at risk.
